Church Pews

The principal seats in each church seem to have been held by the families of the wealthiest planters residing in the parish. The right to an exclusive pew was often granted in return for substantial aid in building the church itself.  Such was the reward of John Page and Edmund Jennings who made generous contributions towards the construction of the church at Middle Plantation in the 17th century.
