Colonel Richard Lee

After 1634, the number of land patents for Virginia land increased, and patentees were no longer recorded as "gentlemen," or "yeomen", rather "esquire". In a document which Colonel Richard Lee signed at Gravesend, England in 1655, he described himself as "Colonel Richard Lee, of Virginia, in the partes beyond the seas, Esquire."
