James River

The James River. Many of the first settlers owned  lots along the west side of the James River. What remains of the deed records tell us that these lots were small and as the settlers died, they went to wives or husbands. As in the case of Sgt. Gabriell Holland, married at least three times, he inherited a lot from his third wife (who had inherited from her deceased husband). Survival was difficult. Many of the first settlers were massacred by Powhatan in 1621 and 1622; settlers had to return to England for wives, and few children were born.
