17th Century Ceremonies: Marriage Contracts

Sarah Harrison, the daughter of Benjamin Harrison, bound herself in a formal contract not to marry anyone but the other party to the agreement, yet did not bind herself absolutely to William Roacoe. She then boldly repudiated her agreement and married Rev. James Blair. At the wedding ceremony, when called upon by the clergyman who was performing the marriage to say "obey". She replied "No obey." After a second "No obey", he ignored her and proceeded with the ceremony. Source: Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. III, pp. 278.
