Old Virginia Customs: Emigrants Become Naturalized Citizens

Join this blog for more tidbits of old Virginia Customs which led to the American Dream.

Among the emigrants into the colony of Virginia was the arrival of Dutch soldiers who had been captured when New Amsterdam fell into English hands and distributed as servants among the planters.  After their indentures ended, they all wished to become naturalized citizens. In 1666, those who went through the legal process and obtained naturalization papers were Andrew Herbert or Hobart, John Young, William Martin, Bartholomew Engelbockson, Lawrence Van Slott, Henry Wagemaan, Nicholas Koch, Thomas Harmanson and others.
