Bridewell Prison to Virginia

Persons from the Bridewell were transported to the colonies as servants "of the foreign colonies". They were vagrants, waifs and prostitutes. Bridewell Prison was established in an old royal palace during 1553 in order to punish the disorderly poor and house homeless children.  This house of correction was situated located in the City of London on the banks of the Fleet River.  Needless to say that during the 17th and 18 centuries many people indentured themselves for the price of passage to the American shores. An excellent source for those immigrants is The Complete Book of Emigrants by Peter Wilson Coldham.  More immigrants are listed under "Origins" and is available to members of Virginia Pioneers

More information concerning early settlers to Virginia, their adventures and origins, is found under "Origins" and available to members of Virginia Pioneers
