Law of Primogeniture

During the 17th century among the planting class were families who had sprung directly from English merchants. Many of these traced their pedigrees back to landed proprietors in the different shires because in that age a very large proportion of those engaged in trade in the cities had come in from the rural parishes. The law of primogeniture had a powerful influence in causing many of the younger sons of the landed gentry to emigrate to Virginia in search of fortune.
