The Home of Governor Edward Digges

Governor Edward Digges was buried at Bellfield Plantation near Yorktown, Virginia. He was born Marh 29, 1621 in Fordwich, England and died March 15, 1674 in York County, Virginia.  Elizabeth Diggs furnished her homes with the most attractive patterns which England afforded.  There were courches covered with embroiderd Russian-lather, or Turkey-worked cloth. (This is the material which resembles turkish rugs). In her parlor she had some 9 chairs bound in this fabric and 11 with cloth, into which a pattern of arrows had been wovn. Two of her rooms were laid with Turkey-worked carpets and the windows had linen curtains..
