Colonel Richard Lee

After 1634, the number of land patents for Virginia land increased, and patentees were no longer recorded as "gentlemen," or "yeomen", rather "esquire". In a document which Colonel Richard Lee signed at Gravesend, England in 1655, he described himself as "Colonel Richard Lee, of Virginia, in the partes beyond the seas, Esquire."

Colonel Richard Lee emigrated to Virginia ca 1641 or 1642. A letter still extant from Lancelet Lee to Thomas Lee shows that he was descended from John Lee of Coton. Source: William G. Stganard, Virginia Magazine of Hiatory and Biography, Vol. VI, p. 256.
