Wives Imported into the Colony Series: Thomas Bushrod

It appears that the wedding itself created a general attitude of relaxation among people of all classes, sometimes to the disregard of duty. In a court in York County in 1656 a witness in a case testified that upon his arrival at Mr. Thomas Bushrod's residence, he was surprised to find his tobacco crop in a neglected condition. "Mr. Bushrod," said he, "what do you mean by suffering your tobacco to run up so high; and why do you not topp it?" Mr. Bushrod replied that "his overseer, Richard Barkshyre, had gone to a wedding at Pyanketank without his consent, and he knew not to helpe it." Source: York County Records, Vol. 1657-62, p. 125.
