Among the most active supporters of the royal cause were the Randolphs, a family which enjoyed had enjoyed distinction in England but who were dispersed by the upshot of the Civil Wars. William Randolph was the first to emigrate to Virginia, a step which he took towards restoring the fortunes of the family. Before the close the colonial period a series of noble plantations in the most fertile part of the country along the Lower James River were the property of the Randolphs. Source:
