Wives Imported into the Colony Series: The Massacre

Soon after the first known shipment of wives imported into the Colony, the famous Indian massacre occurred, 1622/1623.  Chief Powhatan, determined to kill all white men, ravaged the entire Virginia peninsula.  The Indian attacks and pillages was probably the main source of distress which the first settlers experienced.  Anyone researching this time-frame should search for more than one wife per settler.  A fair number of the first settlers of Jamestown were on the high seas more than once, returning to England to make another marriage.
