Carter Berkeley was the fifth child of Nelson and Elizabeth (Wormeley Carter) Berkeley and was born at "Airwell" in Hanover County, Virginia on June 20, 1768. He was a direct descendant of Colonel Edmund Berkeley of Barn Elms in Middlesex County. His maternal grandfather was Landon Carter of "Sabine Hall" of Richmond County.
