The isolated life on the large plantation reached out and built communities. The over-flow from vegetable gardens and plants went into plantation stores constructed for the use of the community. Some of the most influencial planters of the day were Samuel Mathews, George Menefie, Robert Beverley, Adam Thoroughgood, Ralph Wormeley, William Fitzhugh, Edmund Scarborough and William Byrd.
