What is a Mercer?
A mercer is a dealer in textiles. William Munford came to Virginia as an agent of his brother John Munford, a London grocer. He described himself in various deeds as a mercer, sometimes a tobacconist. Source: William and Mary Quarterly Vol 3, page 128; York County records vol 1657-62 pp 28, 135.
