Cruelty a Cause for Separation

In 1699, Mrs. Mary Taylor of Elizabeth City County complained to the county court that her husband was "so cross and cruel" that she could not live with him. For this cause she begged that he should be required to provide for her maintenance, in a home of her own, where she would be "secure from danger".  The court promptly ordered him to deliver up her furniture and wearing apparel and to contribute twelve hundred pounds of tobacco or six pounds sterling annually to her support.
