Thomas Chamberlaine and James Brain

Colonists bet on the most trifling issues. It was a popular diversion from the cares of the day and does not appear to have been discountenanced by the county courts. When the question of a wager was brought before them, the rule for justices was to refer the dispute to a jury. There was the case of Thomas Chamberlaine and James Brain of Henrico County when a bet of five pounds sterling was made in 1688.
