Robert Beverley was a native of Virginia, born before the end of the 17th century. His social connections and travels contributed to his book "History of Virginia". The book reflects upon the happy temperament of his friends and contemporaries. He was a devoted patriot who loved freedom and hated tyranny, an attitude which was probably fostered by growing up on a plantation and enjoying political independence from the mother country.
