Colonial Gardens

The surroundings of the Virginia planter's residence were plain and simple. The yard consisted of open ground, overshadowed here and there by trees. In the immediate vicinity of the house was situated the garden, deboted to vegetables and herbs such as thyme and marjoram. The herb portion of the planting was located near the outdoor kitchen.
